Duodenal Switch Surgery in Puerto Rico
The duodenal switch procedure is the short name for the clinical name biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS) or gastric reduction duodenal switch (GRDS). The duodenal switch is a weight loss surgery that removes approximately 70% of the stomach along the greater curvature.
Additionally, this surgery reroutes a long portion of the small intestine, creating two separate pathways and one common channel. The objective of the surgery is to reduce the amount of time the body has to capture calories from food in the small intestine and to limit the absorption of fat. Typical results show that post-surgery duodenal switch patients absorb only 20% of the fat they ingest.
