Prosthodontists specialize in the restoration of broken or missing teeth. They are familiar with a wide range of dental prosthesis and materials as well as different types of imaging and radiology.
Because each patient’s situation is different, a prosthodontist starts treatment by speaking with the patient, determining how the damage occurred and evaluating a plan for treatment. Dental damage or loss can be caused by genetics, disease, or trauma. The prosthodontist also typically discusses any health condition that might disqualify the patient from some procedures.
The prosthodontist then proceeds to order the appropriate tests to clarify the condition of the tooth and the severity of the damage. Most commonly, the dentist will order x-rays and additional tests if necessary.
Once the tests have been made, the dentist then decides on the best prosthesis for the situation and discusses the options with the patient. The options might include bridges, crowns, dental implants, veneers, or complex solutions, such as an All-on-4, a procedure that uses four implants as a base for replacing several teeth in one jaw.
