General Dentistry is Also Known as Odontology
Odontology is the branch of medicine that deals with the teeth, as well as the rest of the oral cavity and the maxillofacial area, especially the jaws. It’s a practice that is commonly called dentistry, (although “odontology” and “dentistry” can be used as synonyms). The terms “odontologist” and “dentist” can be used as synonyms as well. Odontologists often further specialize in dental areas, such as orthodontics.
Odontology is an important part of medicine because the health of the teeth and gums are key factors in both the physical and mental well being of a person.
Odontologists examine the mouths of patients and diagnose and treat diseases and conditions of the mouth and teeth. Odontologists also perform preventive treatments in order to keep these problems from arising.
The common procedures performed by odontologists include physical evaluations, periodic check-ups, tooth cleaning, x-rays, fillings, extractions, crowns, bridges, implants, braces, and more. Some of these require a further specialty.
The most common problems odontologists deal with are tooth decay and gum disease, which account for almost all cases of tooth loss.
